Find answers to the most common questions about Hotchkiss, one of Calgary's newest southeast communities, built around a 30-acre wetland and boardwalk system with stunning mountain views.
Hotchkiss is located in southeast Calgary, bounded by Marquis of Lorne Trail (Highway 22X) to the south and Stoney Trail to the west, near 146 Avenue SE. The community is within Ward 12, represented by Councillor Evan Spencer.
The community is named after Harley Hotchkiss, a prominent Calgary businessman, community leader, and former owner of the Calgary Flames. The name was adopted by Calgary City Council on May 6, 2013.
Hotchkiss is built around more than 30 acres of wetlands surrounded by boardwalks, creating a central gathering area for families. The community features Western mountain views, open green spaces, and pathways connecting every home to nature within a short walk.
The Calgary Board of Education has designated specific schools for Hotchkiss students. The typical paths are McKenzie Towne School (K-6), McKenzie Highlands School (7-9), and Lord Beaverbrook High School (10-12). French immersion students attend Sam Livingston, David Thompson, and Dr. E.P. Scarlett.
On March 30, 2026, Calgary Transit launched On Demand service in Hotchkiss. Residents can book trips through the "On Demand Calgary Transit" app to nearby amenities and transit hubs, connecting to the larger transit network—ideal for growing communities without fixed-route bus service yet.
Hotchkiss offers easy access to Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail, providing a straight route to downtown Calgary. The commute typically takes 25-35 minutes depending on traffic.
The average price in Hotchkiss is approximately $540,000, which is below the overall Calgary region average of $650,000. Larger homes over 2,000 sq ft have a median list price around $737,338.
Hotchkiss is being developed in partnership by Hopewell Residential Communities and Qualico Communities Calgary. Broadview Homes is one of the builders offering single-family homes in the community.
Hotchkiss residents have easy access to South Health Campus hospital, shops and services in surrounding communities (Seton, McKenzie Towne), schools, and recreational facilities. The 30-acre wetland and boardwalk system serves as the community's central gathering area.
Alternative program designations include Spanish Bilingual at Eugene Coste, Robert Warren, and Crescent Heights; Chinese/Mandarin at Midnapore and Harold Panabaker; Traditional Learning Centre (TLC) at Le Roi Daniels and Fairview; Science at Maple Ridge and R.T. Alderman; Arts-Centred Learning at Willow Park; and single-gender programs at Alice Jamieson (all-girls) and Sir James Lougheed (all-boys).
Hotchkiss is designed to accommodate approximately 5,000 residents, with full build-out expected over the next 15 to 20 years. It is one of southeast Calgary's most thoughtfully planned new communities, balancing residential development with natural wetlands and open spaces.
