Find answers to the most common questions about Bowness, a historic riverside neighbourhood in northwest Calgary known for its small-town charm, Bow River pathways, and the beloved Bowness Park.
Bowness is located in the northwest quadrant of Calgary, bordered by the Bow River to the north and east, 16 Avenue NW to the south, and Stoney Trail to the west. The community is situated across the river from the upscale neighbourhood of Varsity, with Shouldice Park and the University of Calgary nearby.
Bowness was established in 1896 and was originally its own town before amalgamating with the City of Calgary in 1964. The name was chosen by early settler Thomas Stone, who had enjoyed visiting Bowness-on-Windermere in the English Lake District. Many of the community's original infrastructure features, including the streetcar bridge and Bowness Park, were developed by English solicitor John Hextall in the early 1910s. The Bowness Community Association continues to preserve the area's unique heritage and spirit.
Bowness Park is one of Calgary's most cherished recreational destinations, sitting between the Bow River and a scenic lagoon. The park offers a miniature ride-on train, paddleboats and canoe rentals in summer, ice skating on the lagoon in winter, picnic areas with fire pits, and walking and cycling trails. The park connects to Edworthy Park and the broader Bow River pathway system.
Bowness offers a mix of single-family homes, townhomes, and low-rise apartment buildings. The housing stock includes character homes from the early 1900s, mid-century bungalows, and newer infills. Like many older Calgary neighbourhoods, Bowness is experiencing gentrification with the renovation and reconstruction of housing and commercial properties. Condominiums or apartments make up about 31% of dwellings, with 46% used for renting. Check Realtor.ca for current listings in the area.
Bowness is home to Bowness High School, a public high school built before amalgamation. Other schools include Thomas B. Riley School (7-9), Bowness Elementary School, Belvedere Parkway Elementary, Bowcroft Elementary, and Our Lady of the Assumption School (K-9). The community is within the Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District.
Bowness features Bowness Park, Shouldice Park (batting cages, soccer fields, accessible playground), Bowmont Park (192-hectare natural environment park), and Dale Hodges Park. The neighbourhood also has direct access to the Bow River pathway system.
Bowness Road is the community's main street, featuring Salt & Pepper (popular Mexican restaurant), Cadance Coffee, Bow Cycle & Sports (iconic Calgary bike shop since 1958), Light Cellar Superfoods, WINS Thrift Store, and Bowness Health Foods. Market Mall is located approximately 2 km east for major shopping.
Multiple Calgary Transit bus routes serve Bowness with connections to downtown and LRT stations. The commute to downtown Calgary takes approximately 25-35 minutes. Major roads include Crowchild Trail, 16 Avenue NW, and Stoney Trail. Park-and-ride facilities are available nearby at University Station and Crowfoot Station. Quick access to the Trans-Canada Highway makes mountain travel easy.
Bowness is conveniently located near Foothills Medical Centre (approximately 4.4 km east) and Alberta Children's Hospital (approximately 3.5 km southeast). These major Calgary hospitals provide comprehensive medical services including 24/7 emergency care.
