The name "Innisfail" is derived from the Irish term meaning "Island of Destiny." The community was originally named Poplar Grove when settlers arrived in 1890, but was later renamed Innisfail by a prominent Irish-Canadian family. Innisfail was incorporated as a village in 1900 and as a town in 1903.
