Bowness was established in 1896 and was originally its own town before amalgamating with the City of Calgary in 1964. The name was chosen by early settler Thomas Stone, who had enjoyed visiting Bowness-on-Windermere in the English Lake District. Many of the community's original infrastructure features, including the streetcar bridge and Bowness Park, were developed by English solicitor John Hextall in the early 1910s.
