The $1 Million Street Sign: Airdrie's Yankee Valley Blvd Debate It started with a petition. A simple request to rename Yankee Valley Boulevard in Airdrie. But what seemed like a symbolic gesture has quickly turned into a heated battle over dollars and common sense. Here's the story. For some residents, the word "Yankee" feels out of place in Alberta—especially given ongoing trade tensions and U.S. tariffs. They argue it's time for a name that reflects Canadian identity. But then came the backlash. And it wasn't quiet. Residents flooded social media with a loud, unified message: "Not with our tax dollars." Let's talk about what a street renaming actually costs. First, every single sign along the boulevard would need replacement. Then, every business on that road would have to reprint menus, brochures, signage, and promotional materials. Every resident would need to update driver's licenses, passports, mortgage documents, utility bills, and delivery addresses. The total price tag? Experts say street renamings can easily exceed $1 million when you factor in administrative work and business disruption. And that's exactly what residents are pushing back against. Commenters didn't hold back. One after another, they urged city council to focus on real priorities—the ones Airdrie has been begging for: ? New schools for a growing population ? More health care facilities ? Better roads and infrastructure ? Expanded social services and mental health support As one resident put it: "I don't care what the street is called. I care that my kid's school is overcrowded and I can't find a family doctor." The debate isn't really about a name anymore. It's about what matters most to a community. Do you spend millions on rebranding a road? Or do you invest that money into the services families actually need every single day? Airdrie is listening. And so far, the answer seems clear.
