Crossfield is undeniably a community on the grow, meaning both new opportunities and capacity constraints are set to shape 2025 and beyond. The 2024 municipal census showed 4,211 residents living in the town, an increase of 17 per cent - upwards of 600 new residents - since 2021. That means Crossfield is growing at an annual rate of approximately 4 to 5 per cent. Mayor Kim Harris said infrastructure and staffing needs have resulted in a keen focus on critical areas for the community. "A significant amount of time was allocated to areas focused on addressing growth-related demands, as well as optimization of services being provided," Harris said. Among some of the most notable 2024 achievements for council, upgrading fire department radio communication systems and securing a replacement fire engine was at the top of their list. It's due to arrive in Crossfield later this year. Then there was the completion of the water meter replacement program, which led to a change-out of all water meters within the town to more modern meters with enhanced reading features. And a wastewater disposal study was also completed for increasing the ability to process and dispose of wastewater in a safe and environmentally conscious manner - helping set the framework for a long-term wastewater treatment solution. "As part of improving upon our long-term planning for the town, we have transitioned to a 10-year capital plan for 2025," Mayor Harris added. "This change supports areas such as long-term financial planning, risk mitigation, and enhances transparency and accountability." Looking back at some key 2024 figures, Mayor Harris said Crossfield processed 135 development permit applications, including 83 applications for new homes and two applications for a new industrial buildings.
