Coventry Hills is one of those nice neighbourhoods that happens to be in the "NE", but being west of Deerfoot, it has more in common with the NW. I wouldn't worry about safety there. Deerfoot has bad days, but generally the afternoons are much worse than the mornings. Currently I am stranded at work in the deep south because an accident has closed Deerfoot, and the possible alternate routes are parking lots when Deerfoot ISN'T closed. Going to the SW like you would, you could also go west on Country Hills Blvd. to 14th St. and south from there as a possible alternate.
