Best places to live outside Calgary You might consider AIRDRIE. BEARSPAW. BRAGG CREEK .COCHRANE CHESTERMERE. SPRINGBANK towns south of the city. Okotoks is a suburb with big box stores within 15 minutes of Calgary city limits (about an hour from the airport in usual traffic.) Further down the road on Hwy 22, Black Diamond, Turner Valley, and Longview still maintain the rural small town feel. They are on the edge of the Foothills/Rockies terrain and have quick access to the road through Kananaskis to Canmore, which is one of the most scenic drives in the world. It is closed all winter, however. Commuting in the winter is not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced anywhere in Southern Alberta where the weather is capricious. The winds blow hard and cold out there. White-out conditions are not uncommon.
