This was down 23.4% from a year earlier. Fewer people came to Alberta from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario compared to a year earlier. A total of 17,262 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the first quarter, an increase of 7.7% from the same period in 2020. More people leaving for British Columbia accounted for most of this increase. The result was a net loss of 3,384 people from Alberta’s population in the first quarter. This was a reversal from a year earlier in the first quarter of 2020 where the province saw a net gain of 2,097. National Migration Chart 0 Changes in population from immigration International immigration added 6,787 people to Alberta’s population in the first quarter of 2021. This was a decrease of 8.8% from the same period in 2020.
