Alberta has a population of more than four million, concentrated in our major urban centres of Calgary and Edmonton. It is the fourth largest province in Canada, covering an area of 661,000 sq km (255,214 sq mi). We are known as a prairie province but our landscapes vary from towering mountains, glacial lakes and vast boreal forests to rolling foothills, fertile prairies and desert badlands. Alberta has 245 rivers and more than 600 lakes. Parks Alberta has 27,525 sq km (10,627 sq mi) of protected land in over 500 sites including 75 provincial parks. Our five national parks encompass an additional 63,000 sq km (24,000 sq mi) and three of them are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wildlife There are 587 species of wildlife, many of which are endangered or protected, that migrate through or make their home in the province. Keep a lookout for Alberta’s big seven wildlife all-stars – elk, moose, bighorn sheep, grizzly bear, bison, cougar and wolf. You may even be lucky enough to view our more elusive animals such as lynx, bobcat and wolverine.
