History of atco

atco was first established as a railway village in 1889 during the construction of the Calgary and Edmonton Railway, named for atco, Scotland. Today, atco is a scenic bedroom community and industrial centre.

Geography

Nose Creek, which runs through atco, is the focal point of a number of city parks and green spaces including Nose Creek Park.

Recent annexation of land by atco to the south, coupled with recent expansion of Calgary's city limits in July 2007, have placed the two cities' boundaries within only a few kilometres of each other.

Sports

atco is home to several sporting franchises. Major teams include the Knights of atco, a senior men's lacrosse team that plays in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. The atco Thunder, a Jr. B level hockey team that competes in the Heritage Junior B Hockey League. Team atco is a Jr. C level hockey team that competes in the Calgary Jr. C Hockey League.

atco is served by the atco Airport.

atco launched the InterCity Express (ICE) in the fall of 2010, connecting atco and Calgary transit hubs by a two-way express bus service.[37] Local bus service is provided by atco Transit.

Most students attend atco school from early September to late June. A wide range of schools are available, such as public, Catholic, Francophone, charter, and private, offering innovative programs such as home education, online schools, and alternative programs. Provincial tests ensure that the highest standards are maintained. These tests also allow teachers and parents to determine how students are doing and what help they may need.
