Active cases of the coronavirus rose again today (April 28) in both the City of Airdrie and Rocky View County while one of the highest totals of new cases was found today in the Province of Alberta. In Airdrie Alberta 22 additional active cases were reported today making the number in the city now 358. In the county, the active case count climbed over 200 today, with 17 more cases than yesterday. There are now 202 active cases in Rocky View. Today the province reported 1,839 new cases of the virus to bring the active case count to 20,938, a rise of 217 from yesterday's total. Alberta is just 200 active cases away from our dubious record of 21,138 active cases that was set during the height of the second wave in December. The number of variants was up nearly 200 today to 1,058. They now account for 63 percent of all active cases in Alberta. Alberta performed 18,976 tests bringing our daily positivity rate to 9.7 percent. Eight more people joined the ranks of those in hospital in Alberta, now 643. Two more patients entered the ICU in the past 24 hours making that total now 145. Six more Albertans succumbed to COVID-19 for a total of 2,073 that have died since the pandemic got underway. Just 18,863 doses of vaccine were administered in the province on April 27th. Just under 1.5 million doses have now been given out. The percentage of the population who have now received at least one dose of the vaccine is 26.2 percent. The percentage of Albertans who have been fully immunized is 6.2 percent. Also today, Health Minister Tyler Shandro took to Twitter to say that he has approved a three-step change to Alberta's vaccine rollout to protect residents in Wood Buffalo and Banff, two areas that have been hard hit by COVID-19. Shandro says, as soon as they arrive, the province will direct all doses of the Janssen vaccines, as supply allows, to those two areas. He also says, as soon as possible, the eligibility age for the AstraZeneca and Janssen vaccines will be lowered to age 30 plus for those two areas, and the Moderna eligibility age will be lowered to 30 plus for adjacent indigenous communities around Wood Buffalo. Immunization clinics will be set up immediately in Rural Municipality of Wood Buffalo work camps as soon as the Janssen vaccine arrives, which will help oil workers access the vaccine to reduce outbreaks. Currently, the Banff and Lake Louise areas have 158 active cases while Wood Buffalo has the highest per-capita rate of active cases in the province and has declared a local state of emergency in the area. April 1st the region reported 166 active cases but on Tuesday, April 27th, that number had grown to 1,229.
